Welcome to the “THE CHOICE, the unexpected heroes” Blog Tour! @gmplano @4WillsPub #RRBC

It’s Thursday on the blog, and today, I would like to showcase another fabulous #RRBC author, Ms. Gwen Plano, and her novel, The Choice. Take it away, Gwen!

I have never been on an active military base, and yet THE CHOICE takes place on an air force base in northern California. Because of my limited knowledge, I not only researched military protocols, I relied on the guidance of my cousin, retired Lieutenant General John D. Smith. He carefully read the manuscript and suggested modifications where needed.

Today I share one of his suggestions, which not only assisted the story but also helped me understand respect within the ranks. It is a simple scene but what is communicated is powerful. I have bolded my cousin’s edit.

The setting: General Taylor, the commander of the base, is meeting with Secretary of Defense Vasquez and Admiral Parker in his office . . .

The three wrap up their discussions. Taylor addresses the secretary, “You mentioned the Officers’ Club. Would you accompany me as my guest today? I guess we could all use a drink.”

Vasquez spreads his arms wide and smiles. “Lead the way.”

Within minutes of leaving the office, they arrive at the Club. When they walk through the restaurant, each officer present stands. The Secretary of Defense acknowledges their respect with a nod.

Gwen, you stated that you had to do some research on the military base for your story. Well, I want you to know that you are looking at a real life descendant of a Rosie the Riveter. That was my mother who worked as a riveter at the Naval Air Base in Alameda, California. I’m in the midst of writing and just finished looking up records the other day on my mother’s background. Chills went up my spine.

Thank you Karl for hosting Gwen.

Beautiful, Shirley. My mom was a Rosie the Riveter as well. It’s so impressive how women jumped in and worked long hours during WWII, to do their part. Thank you for sharing your mom’s background. I look forward to reading your next book! 🙂

It just goes to show that you can write about things you don’t know as long as you’re willing to put in the work and do the research. Very good, Gwen! Thanks for hosting, Karl! 😀 xo

Hi, Gwen! How wonderful you have a source for all things military for your books. I rely on my son to spot glaring mistakes. 🙂 It has been a fun way to interact with him. I have the Choice on my Kindle and look forward to reading it!
